Use These Tips to Prepare for Moving Day

Moving day is just around the corner. Have you prepared everything you possibly can? Some families like to plan weeks and months in advance, that way there’s nothing last minute to worry about. And that way, if something does come up, they have plenty of time to take care of it. On the other hand, some families may wait until the final weeks to get everything done.

Everyone has their own style. Either way, below are a few tips you can use to make the moving process easier, whether using a moving company and movers or doing it yourself.

Declutter!

Although it’s easier said than done for some families, the easiest way to move a bunch of items is to not have to move as many items! Either before you begin packing your boxes or during the process, start filtering through your belongings and taking stock of what’s useful or valuable and what isn’t. Get rid of what you don’t want and won’t need to make more room in your new home.

Pack Room by Room

It’s easier to focus on one room at a time and to organize boxes based on the purpose of the items within them. For example you can start with your kitchen and only box items that are intended for the kitchen. This way when you load and unload all of your boxes into the new home, all of your kitchen oriented items will be side by side.

Going room by room also helps to break up the whole process into more manageable, bite-sized segments.

Use Labels

You can use labels to categorize boxes based on their purpose or room they will be in. You can even color code the labels or boxes to help categorize items more efficiently. For example you can organize by kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, garage, and so on.

Get Utilities Setup Before You Arrive

You don’t want to show up and get cozy into a home that doesn’t have your favorite utilities up and running! Take the time to set up utilities in advance, like your internet access, and alert the post office about your new address.

Always Keep Medicine and Essentials On Hand

Avoid being caught not knowing where important medicine or other essentials and valuables are in the middle of your big move. Having it handy will reduce stress in a time of need and otherwise simplify the process when things don’t go as planned.

Hire a Moving Crew

A team of movers specialize in transporting boxes, furniture, and other belongings from one destination to the next. Why not get a professional moving company to handle all that weight and work if you don’t want to spend a lot of your time doing all the heavy lifting yourself?

Don't Be Keith Hernandez

In a famed series of episodes of the hit TV show “Seinfeld”, Jerry has struck up a friendship with former New York Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez. Jerry is proud of the new friendship and enjoys rubbing shoulders with a member of his favorite baseball franchise. Then it happens. After hanging out a few times, Keith pops the question to Jerry. He asks Jerry to help him move. This sparks shock from Jerry and his group of friends leading Jerry to liken helping a friend move is equivalent to “going all the way” in a male relationship. His willingness finally leads Kramer to question Jerry’s pride and dignity and eventually leads to the end of Jerry and Keith’s friendship. It’s one of the classic episodes of a classic show.

While it's all played for laughs, it does highlight the value in hiring movers. Moving is a daunting undertaking and without the necessary help and equipment, it can take far longer than anticipated. Your stuff is heavy and it takes a long time to get it all where it needs to go. Don’t be like Keith Hernandez and willingly test the limits of your new or old friendships. If you’ve got friends like Jerry Seinfeld who would rather let your friendship die than help you move, you should let HotShots do the heavy lifting and help you keep your friendships in tact.

A Personal Story

“The date was set and the boxes were all loaded up. We called all of our friends and told them what time to meet so we could load the moving truck. Saturday came and just a few people showed up. Except for the few hours that our friends gave to help, we were basically on our own. What should have taken just a few hours, wound up taking us three days. In hindsight, I should’ve hired a moving company.”

This story has been repeated over and over. A couple or a family thinks that they can get it done really quickly by themselves and it winds up taking way longer. The value of a moving company can’t be overstated. Moving yourself means that you are investing a lot of your own time, which is a valuable commodity. A lot of people think that hiring a moving company is a luxury, but the reality is that having professionals who know what they’re doing load and move your stuff relieves a huge burden and allows you to have a much more relaxed moving experience.

If you’re considering moving, you should really consider hiring a moving company. Hot Shots Moving has the right people who can take care of your belongings, works hard and provides trustworthy movers to make sure that your personal belongings get where they need to be without getting lost or broken. Don’t regret your moving experience. Hire a professional moving company and let them take care of you.

What to Look for in Your Next Moving Company

Moving is stressful enough for most families and businesses, so eliminate the stress by hiring a moving company that will take a number of issues off your mind. Movers are there to keep you from straining your back or having to worry about logistics. They will handle the planning, work with you to create a schedule that works for you, and get you moved before you know it.

Professional Employees

Finding true professional movers is important because you can trust them to come into your home and deal with all of your possessions without you having to follow every step they take. From clean cut images to uniforms, these types of things show you that the company you have chosen takes being a moving company seriously. The employees are the representatives of the company, so they should want to have the best reputation in the industry with quality and professional movers.

Insured

Furniture, televisions, electronics, or vintage antiques are always important items when you hire a moving company. Being insured is a normal feature for movers, but ask these questions just to be sure. After the move is complete and you realize your grandmothers’ china hutch has been damaged, you don’t want to learn that the moving company you selected does not have the right insurance to repair it. These are factors that should go into the planning stage of hiring movers. Have peace of mind with your valuable items being moved properly and safely.

Offers Full Service Features

Moving companies do not only load and unload furniture. There are companies out there that can come in and pack up your house for you. They will pack all of your items professionally, label everything properly, and even unpack items when you arrive at your new location. You may not need these features, but movers that cover these kinds of services are usually able to handle any special requests you may have during your move. Ask these questions up front.

Free Estimates

The days of a moving company quoting you a flat free by how many rooms you have is in the past. Find movers who will send out a representative and provide you with a free and accurate estimate. That way they can truly tell how many items need to be moved, but also offer suggestions that you may not have thought of that will make your move better and more enjoyable.
